The DEMANDS Project and the Open Educational Platform 

The DEMANDS project is a good illustration of how Moodle can be utilized to enable vocational training. Designed to enhance intercultural communication competencies of (ex)workers of the coal industry, DEMANDS aims at reskilling and upskilling low-skilled adults to make them competitive in a constantly changing job market. 

One of the key elements of the project is constructing an Open Educational Platform (OEP). This platform will function as a one-stop-shop for training material, testing tools, and issuing microcredentials that address both the short-term learning needs and long-term career plans of its users. 

Construction of the OEP is central to the DEMANDS project. This is how it stands out:

  • Integrated learning environment: The OEP offers a vast library of learning material and training content in one, conveniently accessible web-based interface. This integration offers students an optimized experience, discovering access to anything from video lectures to interactive exercises in one place. 

  • Assessment and certification: The key strength of the OEP is the embedded assessment framework. Not only does this track learners’ progress, but it also issues microcredentials—open badges that verify the acquisition of intercultural communication skills. These credentials are concrete proof of skill acquisition, improving employability. 

  • Collaborative development: The platform design is enhanced by a multidisciplinary approach. Experts in vocational education, ICT, and intercultural communication have collaborated to ensure that the platform meets both educational needs and industry needs.
